The aim of this study was to screen newborns in India for pyruvate kinase (PK) deficiency in relation to unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia.
In kidney medulla of rabbits with alloxan diabetes the pyruvate kinase activity was increased by 39 % as compared with control animals.
The hepatic pyruvate kinase activity markedly decreased when rats were made diabetic by alloxan injection.
The IN group showed higher (P (0.05) hepatic glucose production from glycerol , L-alanine and L-glutamine and higher (P (0.05) production of L-lactate , pyruvate and urea from L-alanine and L-glutamine.
